What do Programs look like?

Mobile and Low Element Activities

Most days at the Challenge Center begin with a series of quick, energetic icebreakers. Designed to set a tone of fun and excitement, these games enable participants to overcome any fears of embarrassment and ridicule. "Energizers" help to establish a safe space for the day, where individuals feel supported to step forward and take an active role in the group process. Individual participants always have a right and responsibility to assess each activity and choose how to participate; if someone decides to step back, that choice is honored and respected and he or she is encouraged to find a different role.

After reviewing goals and expectations for the day, groups progress through a series of problem-solving activities. These "initiatives" are chosen by the facilitators with regard to how appropriate they are for the group, and how they address issues relevant to the program goals. Certain events take place on the Challenge Center's low elements, which may include swinging on ropes, traversing planks and wires, and balancing on logs (all close to the ground). Along with the facilitator, the group provides the safety system by "spotting" and supporting one another throughout the event.

Activities conclude with reflection, discussion and analysis. Facilitators pose questions that encourage thoughtful response - participants must think "outside the box" to assess themselves and find opportunities for growth.

High Element Activities

Some, though not all, Challenge Center programs progress to the high element events found in the trees and poles stretching up to 47 feet above ground. Successes in the low activities establish a safe, supportive environment where participants feel capable of stepping beyond their comfort zone. Whether climbing a wall, diving for a trapeze, or riding a giant swing, these exciting elements deliver the impression of risk, though they are built to be as safe as any activity on the ground.

Some participants might be comfortable with the loftiest heights, while others might be pushing their limits on the first rungs of a ladder. Facilitators encourage everyone to attempt the high elements, rather than necessarily emphasizing completion of the event - the experience is different for every person. We offer a range of events, varying in difficulty and accommodating the different people who come to the course.
