What if I’m a novice?

That’s perfect! We specialize in adventures for beginners. By providing transportation, the necessary gear, and knowledgeable trip leaders, we make getting outside stress-free! Learn the basic skills needed to start your adventures.  And, chances are, you won’t be alone; there will be many others who are new to the experience joining you on the trip.

What if I don’t know anyone?

If you’re signing up alone, don’t worry! One of the best things about our trips is that you’ll have the chance to meet and bond with new people. Trip leaders will help facilitate conversations in the vans, on the trail, or over the campfire. Have some laughs and enjoy time with other students from Sac State.

What is included?

Transportation to and from campus*, experienced trip leaders, permits, reservations, and all technical gear. Oh, and fun! Did we mention fun?! A GREAT value!

*Whitewater rafting trips do not include transportation from campus but do include a river shuttle.

Who leads the trip?

Our experienced trip leaders will lead your trip! Each has undergone hands-on training with Peak Adventures and is certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. They love the outdoors, having fun, and working with new people daily.

Who can sign up?

All of our trips are open to the public, Sac State students, and anyone over 18!

Challenge Center FAQs

What is a ropes course?

A ropes course is an outdoor structure built of low and/or high elements and is used to facilitate team-building and personal development programs. Low elements take place on or just above the ground. High elements are often built in trees or utility poles and require a safety system including harnesses, ropes, and hardware. Here at Peak Adventures, we have various high and low elements, including a rock wall, catwalk, multi-line, and the popular dive. Many of our elements can be viewed here.

How much does it cost?

Our pricing is variable and customized depending on the group, activities, and time. (just like our programming).

Request more info

What will we be doing?

A typical program begins with an ice breaker, followed by energizers to get the group engaged and warmed up. Next, the facilitator will begin initiatives that utilize the low elements of the course. Initiatives are tools made of games, trust sequences, and communication activities used to achieve your requested team-building results. The group then moves to the high elements (i.e., rock wall, cargo nets, the dive, etc). The program will end with one final closing activity and a wrap-up of the group’s accomplishments.

Each of our programs are specifically tailored to achieve your personal goals and is customized in its planning, development, and implementation. The above description shows a basic overview, but may fluctuate based on your group objectives.

Is it safe?

Physical and emotional safety is our number one priority. The Peak Adventures Challenge Center fully complies with all current Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards. It undergoes an annual inspection by an ACCT professional vendor member and daily inspections by Peak Adventures staff members. Our staff receives extensive training to deliver quality programming and recognize potential hazards before they become an issue. We proactively teach all of our participants to make good decisions regarding their involvement and cultivate a culture where participants support one another.

What if it is raining?

The Challenge Center is outdoors and operates rain or shine. We have some covered areas that we’ll utilize during some of the ground activities.  Everyone is encouraged to dress for the weather to be comfortable when they can’t be under a covering.  If weather conditions are deemed unsafe (i.e., high winds or lightning), a Peak Adventure representative will call the group coordinator to cancel or reschedule the program. If it is raining the day of your program and you DO NOT receive a call, your program is still happening! Refunds will not be provided to groups who do not attend due to the weather.  See our refunds page for more details.

What if I’m afraid of heights?

No problem! Challenge Center activities are centered on the concept of challenge by choice. Our staff will encourage people to step outside their comfort zones and challenge themselves at their chosen level. We’ll also guide the group to understand the differences between healthy support and peer pressure. Many people use this opportunity to face their fear of heights in a controlled environment.

What do I wear?

Everyone at the Challenge Center must wear secure, closed-toed shoes. Those wearing inappropriate shoes such as flip-flops, sandals, or Crocs will not be allowed to participate. Beyond that, wear comfortable clothes that you feel comfortable moving around and climbing in, like athletic wear. Also, consider the weather. Since we operate rain or shine, we encourage layers!

What is a Team Lead?

A Team Lead is the staff member who develops and facilitates your customized program. Our Team Leads have over 500 hours of hands-on experience facilitating and leading groups through challenges and transformational activities. Their training includes technical ropes course safety management, CPR, first aid, advanced facilitation, debriefing methods, and group dynamics.

What if I Have a Disability?

If you or someone in your group has a disability, we are happy to provide services and accommodations to ensure every participant has a great experience. Our goal is to make materials and activities accessible to all participants. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with either the Peak Adventures office or your Team Lead to confidentially discuss any necessary accommodations, if applicable.

Where do we park?

Please see the map. You must pay for parking 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can pay on campus at the automated kiosks and information booths, or via the PayByPhone website or mobile app, available for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. If arriving by bus, please refer to the bus parking map or discuss your options with your Team Lead.

What is your cancellation policy?

For details on Peak Adventures’ cancellation and refund policy, please visit our Returns and Refunds page.

What is the minimum age?

The minimum age for all Challenge Center programs is 8 years. Please visit the Minimum Age page for more detailed information.

What is the weight limit?

The Peak Adventures Challenge Center does not currently have a weight restriction. As long as the harness fits appropriately (as determined by staff), you can climb. Importantly, our facilitators may refuse to allow participants to climb if they do not feel the conditions are secure enough to do so. For any concerns or further clarification, please feel free to call our office at 916-278-6321 or email the Challenge Center Manager directly at Gratton@csus.edu. Below you will find information on the Universal size harness we use. Description: “Headwall’s most popular harness is constructed with strong and light 2-inch and 1-inch webbing. The Universal Ropes Course Harness is equipped with double back safety buckles to adjust the fit at the waist and thighs. This harness is extremely versatile with its two overly durable belay loops at the front and rear.” Size: X-Large (Fits Waist: 42″ – 60″) Meets or exceeds the following standards: EN 12277 Type C

The maximum ratio for Explorer Camp and Overnight Camps is two counselors to 10 campers.

Who are the camp counselors?

Our camp counselors are mostly Sac State students. All counselors have background checks, hands-on training, and certifications. Most, if not all, staff have CPR/First Aid certifications, Wilderness First Aid certifications, and Swift Water Rescue certifications. Additionally, all staff working with minors attend all mandatory CSUS trainings associated with minors on campus.

What does my child need to bring to camp?

All Day Campers must bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle.

Your pre-trip email will provide daily and weekly packing lists about two weeks before camp.

Overnight Camp packing questions can also be answered at the pre-trip meetings.

What should my camper bring for lunch? Can they buy lunch?

Please send your camper to Jr. Explorer Camp and Explorer Camp with a daily sack lunch. Refrigeration is not available, and campers are not allowed to buy food.

Peak Adventures provides all the food at overnight camps. If your child has food sensitivities, please let us know during the registration process.

What is the cancellation policy?

  • A minimum payment of 50% per child, per camp, is required for all registrations.

  • Full payment is due 14 days before the first day of camp

  • There is a minimum $100 non-refundable deposit per child, per camp that  is included in the initial registration payment

  • Within 14-30 days of the camp’s start date, a refund of 50% may be issued

  • Anytime before the 14-30 day window, camp registration is fully refundable, minus the $100 deposit

  • Late pick-ups (after 5:15 pm), late drop-offs (after 8:30 am), and early pick-ups (before 5 pm) will result in a $25 fee for every 15 minutes per camper, per occurrence

  • Camp activities begin at 8:00 am each day and end at 5:00 pm. Depending on the planned daily activities, we may be unable to allow early pick-ups and late drop-offs. We cannot guarantee when campers will return from their daily off-campus activities

  • There are no refunds, pro-rates, or make-up days if a camper is absent

  • Peak Adventures may cancel camps, with a refund, if minimum enrollment is not met

  • In the event of location-specific safety concerns (smoke, weather, closures, or any other safety concern), Peak Adventures may offer an alternative location or switch weekly activity days. In the event we change locations or activity days, parents will be notified, and refunds will not be issued

What if my camper is close to the age range?

Sorry, we are firm on our age cutoff dates.

What is the daily schedule?

Daily activities vary depending on the day and the week. For a general overview, please see each camp’s webpage.

What if my camper needs to miss a day?

Please inform us in advance so other campers’ programming isn’t impacted. If a camper is absent, there are no make-up days, and we do not prorate for absences.

Leaving mid-week at overnight camps is not possible.

When does camp begin/end?

All Day Camps begin at 8:00 am and end at 5:00 pm daily.

Drop-off is 8:00 am. Pick-up is  5:00 pm ( For Explorer Camp rafting Fridays, Campers may return to campus 15 minutes late due to traffic)

Drop-off and pick-up times for Overnight Camps may vary.

Where do I drop off/pick up my child?

All camps’ drop-off and pick-up are at the Peak Adventures Office, located near the north end of the University Union on Sacramento State’s campus. See this page for a map and directions.

Where do I park?

The best parking spot is a 30-minute spot on either side of the Hornet Bookstore. Find directionshere.

If you decide to stay on campus longer than 30 minutes, you can find more details about parking at Sac State here.

Can I drop off or pick up early/late?

Early pickup and late drop-off are allowed most days for the Jr. Explorer camp. However, on the paddleboarding day, this will not be an option. Please complete the late drop-off or early pickup notification form with the front desk.

Explorer and Overnight Camp are off-site, making late drop-offs and early pick-ups impossible.

Can someone else pick my camper up?

Yes, anyone who is picking up your child must be listed on the Pickup Authorization Form and must bring a picture ID.

When is my camper registration packet due?

It is mandatory to bring your completed packet with you on the first day of camp.  Remember that all pages need wet (original) signatures and can not be electronically signed.

Do I need to fill out every page of the registration packet?

Yes, every page must be completed. We know the forms may seem redundant, but our campus partners (the pool, the WELL, etc.) also need individually signed waivers. Each camper needs their own individual registration packet fully completed.

If your camper is coming for multiple weeks, please bring a newly completed registration packet each week.
